Myrtle Beach Mass Shooting: 11 Injured, 1 Individual Fatally Shot by Police

Posted by Clay Hopkins | Apr 28, 2025 | 0 Comments

On Saturday night, April 27, 2025, the Myrtle Beach community was rocked by a devastating act of violence. Along the busy tourist corridor of Ocean Boulevard, a mass shooting left eleven individuals wounded and created chaos in one of South Carolina's most iconic destinations. According to reports, the suspected shooter, 18-year-old Jerrius Davis, opened fire into a crowd before being fatally shot by law enforcement. (Source: AP News)

At Hopkins Law Firm, our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the entire Myrtle Beach community. No family should have to suffer such a senseless tragedy. While criminal investigations are underway, it is crucial to remember that civil justice is also available — and property owners, event organizers, and other parties may bear legal responsibility for what happened.

What Are the Victims' Legal Rights After a Mass Shooting?

When gun violence strikes in public places, it's natural to focus on the criminal charges against the shooter. But victims and their families often overlook another critical legal path: civil lawsuits for negligent security or premises liability.

Under South Carolina law, businesses and property owners have a duty to take reasonable steps to protect guests and visitors from foreseeable dangers — including violence. If a property owner failed to provide appropriate security measures — such as surveillance cameras, trained security staff, metal detectors, or proper lighting — they may be held civilly liable for injuries and deaths that occur on their premises.

Victims may be entitled to recover damages for:

  • Medical expenses (both immediate and long-term)

  • Lost wages and future earning potential

  • Pain and suffering

  • Emotional trauma

  • Funeral and burial costs (in wrongful death claims)

  • Loss of companionship and support

Was This Mass Shooting Preventable?

In many mass shooting cases, security failures play a tragic role.

Questions that must be investigated include:

  • Were security guards properly staffed and trained?

  • Were there functional surveillance systems monitoring the area?

  • Was the area known for violence, making additional security necessary?

  • Were warning signs ignored about potential threats?

At Hopkins Law Firm, we believe victims deserve answers. If better security could have prevented or minimized this tragedy, the responsible parties must be held accountable.

How Hopkins Law Firm Can Help Victims and Their Families

We understand that no amount of money can undo the pain caused by this horrific event. However, a civil lawsuit can provide financial security, hold wrongdoers accountable, and help force changes to protect future visitors to Myrtle Beach.

Our law firm is ready to:

  • Investigate immediately: We work with security experts, forensic specialists, and former law enforcement to uncover failures.

  • Identify all responsible parties: This can include business owners, property managers, event promoters, and security companies.

  • Pursue maximum compensation: Through aggressive negotiations and trial advocacy.

  • Support you with compassion and dedication every step of the way.

Victims and their families have a limited time to file claims under South Carolina's statutes of limitation. It is critical to act quickly while evidence is still available and memories are fresh.
