Businesses failing to provide adequate fall prevention programs

Residents in South Carolina likely enter businesses on a daily or weekly basis. Whether it is to shop for food, clothing or household items, customers expect that the environment that they are shopping in is safe and free of potential risks and dangers. Unfortunately, some property owners can overlook certain conditions, failing to take action to reduce the potential for a slip-and-fall accident.

Based on a recent study by CNA, which is an insurance and risk management service that provides for businesses and professionals across the globe, many businesses' fall prevention programs tend to overlook the effects that flooring selections can have as well as ongoing maintenance on slip resistance when it comes to slip and fall accidents. As many as 50 percent of the businesses surveyed open themselves up to the risks of having a slip-and-fall accident occurring at their place of business.

Because slip-and-fall accidents can happen at anytime, anywhere and to anyone, it is important that businesses address this potential danger, as customers and visitors do not expect these risks to exist. Failing to reduce the exposure to unsafe flooring and unmaintained slip resistance mechanisms could be the result of a slip-and fall.

Injuries suffered in a slip-and-fall can be extensive. The victim could suffer injuries to the head, back, limbs and even internal organs. This could require extensive medical treatment, even causing temporary or permanent disability. Thus, those harmed in such an incident should take the time to understand their rights. If a negligent property owner is to blame, a premises liability action could help the injured party hold the property owner accountable and help with the recovery of compensation.
