After a car wreck, don't do this

Just like with most things in life, there are some do's and don'ts that you should follow after a car accident. Imagine driving through Pawleys Island when another driver rear ends you. You know that you should stay at the scene and wait for the police. You also know that you should check on the other driver if you are able and, if you are injured, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. These are things you have mostly likely known since you completed a driver's education course when you first got your license.

While you are probably familiar with the things you should do, you may not know about what you should not do after a motor vehicle accident.

Do not brush it off

Even if the accident seems minor and you do not notice any significant damage to your car or yourself, do not brush the accident off. Even if you cannot see major damage, that does not mean it does not exist. Even if you think it is just a fender bender, be sure to get all of the other driver's contact and insurance information so you can file a claim.

Do not apologize

Under no circumstances should you ever apologize after a car accident. Doing so could be seen as an admission of guilt and the insurer might use it against you to deny your claim. Keep communication with the other driver to a minimum, other than exchanging information.

Do not skip the pictures

Do whatever is necessary to document the scene of the accident. This might include taking pictures of the overall scene, the damage to your car, the damage to the other driver's car, and even your injuries. Also, as soon as you can think clearly, write down what happened to the best of your memory. Additionally, obtain a copy of the police report as soon as it is ready.

Do not delay

As soon as possible, contact your insurance to report the accident. Even if it was not your fault, you will still have to notify your insurer. If you delay, you could run into problems further down the road, especially if the other driver's insurance company denies your claim for compensation.

Before you have a car wreck with a negligent driver, be sure you know the do's and don'ts. Making a mistake in the first moments or hours after a motor vehicle accident could damage your chances of receiving a fair settlement.
