Drunk driver charged with felony DUI after multi-vehicle collision

Being involved in an automobile collision is a shocking and scary event. While drivers are required to follow the rules of the road and uphold a certain duty of care, this does not always protect motorists and passengers from negligent and reckless drivers. Whether it is due to distractions, speeding or intoxication, a negligent driver behind the wheel of a vehicle is never a safe situation. In fact, this dangerous matter could be the exact cause of a severe collision involving multiple vehicles, serious injuries and even fatalities.

This is what recently occurred on a South Carolina highway. According to reports, a 36-year-old man was driving his pickup truck on Interstate 20 with a passenger in the truck bed. Apparently, the driver parked his vehicle in the first lane of traffic, causing a vehicle behind him to collide with the rear of his truck. The force of this crash resulted in the second vehicle to travel into another lane of traffic, colliding with a tractor-trailer truck.

When authorities arrived, the man in the bed of the truck was reported dead. The driver of the second vehicle was seriously injured in the collision and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. No injuries were reported to the driver of the pickup truck or the tractor- trailer. Upon initial investigation, authorities charged the driver of the pickup truck with a DUI. He was also charged with a felony DUI causing great bodily injury. At this time, the accident is still under investigation and additional charges could occur.

When a person is injured or killed in a car accident, it is important that victims and the loved ones of the deceased understand their rights. If a drunk driver is the cause of a serious or fatal crash, it is possible to hold that driver responsible. A wrongful death claim or a personal injury suit could hold the driver accountable, helping victims and their loved ones recover compensation for their losses and damages suffered.
