Increase in warm weather traffic raises chance of a car accident

Memorial Day is a holiday to honor those who gave their lives in the course of service in the Armed Forces. For many, it is also a day off from work and is viewed as the official start of the summer season. South Carolina has many appealing destinations for travelers, and that means added traffic to state roadways. Unfortunately, that increases the chance of a car accident, motorcycle accident and any other motor vehicle crash.

With the holiday weekend, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety has reminded drivers to take extra care. Even with that, the chance of a car accident is significant. In 2016, there were eight fatalities on the South Carolina roads on Memorial Day weekend.

The state is focusing on drivers committing DUI, driving while distracted, speeding and failing to wear safety belts in its attempt to improve safety. Drivers are also encouraged to pay attention to those who are not in conventional vehicles. That includes those riding mopeds, bicycles, motorcycles and people traveling on foot. People are also advised to inform law enforcement if they see violations, drivers who are exhibiting behaviors indicative of being under the influence, driving recklessly, speeding and flouting traffic signs and signals.

These factors are important when trying to prevent crashes, but they will not stop them completely even if everyone adheres to the recommendations. People who are injured in a motor vehicle accident or have lost a loved one in a wrongful death incident should make certain that they are aware of their rights. Personal injury claims often benefit from legal assistance. A Pawleys Island South Carolina personal injury attorney can provide information and assistance.
