Study shows rise in pedestrians involved in car accidents

Walking is supposed to be a safe way to get from point A to point B while simultaneously providing good exercise. While driving has inherent dangers, walking is thought to be a method to avoid those risks. For Pawleys Island residents, it might come as a surprise that being a pedestrian can be dangerous by itself, but that is what the most recent statistics analyzed by the Governors Highway Safety Association shows. When a person is in an accident with a motor vehicle as a pedestrian, it can cause a multitude of problems. It is essential to know what to do if this occurs.

The study indicates that there was an 11 percent increase of fatal pedestrian accidents on U.S. roads in 2016. In the first six months of the year, there were 2,660 people killed. That was an increase from 2,486 during the same span in 2015. From 2014, the increase to 2015 was 22 percent. There are two main reasons suggested for this increase: one, there are more vehicles on the road because of the economy being better and gas prices having reduced; two, there are more people who are choosing to walk.

It is difficult to discern the exact circumstances of every pedestrian accident, but a growth in the use of smartphones is serving as a distraction for drivers and pedestrians. If a driver is not watching the road, it is inevitable that accidents will happen. Some will involve hitting a pedestrian. South Carolina ranked fourth in the number of accidents involving a pedestrian in 2016.

The amount of damage that can result from a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle in a car accident or truck accident is substantial. There can be medical costs and long-term damage with accompanying personal, emotional and financial ramifications. If the accident is bad enough, there can be a fatality, which opens a host of other issues. For those who have been injured or have lost a loved one in a crash, personal injury claims may be able to help to garner compensation depending on the circumstances. Discussing a personal injury case or a wrongful death lawsuit with a Pawleys Island South Carolina personal injury attorney can provide information and assistance in filing a claim.
