Man charged with DUI and possessing drugs

Drivers operating their vehicles under the influence is a dangerous situation that can cause injuries, death and property damage. With that in mind, South Carolina law enforcement is constantly on the lookout for drivers who might be driving under the influence. However, just because an arrest was made does not automatically mean that the person is guilty. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding an arrest, it can be imperative that the person discuss the case with a Pawleys Island South Carolina DUI defense attorney to try to avoid the most severe penalties for a conviction.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of several offenses including DUI and possession of cocaine. The incident that precipitated the arrest was when a truck got stuck behind a bar and grill at approximately 2 a.m. When law enforcement was called, they allegedly found the man being pursued by workers at the restaurant as he tried to get away. His vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, had allegedly become stuck in a ditch and he could not get it out. When the officers investigated, they found that the man smelled of alcohol and his behavior indicated signs of impairment.

The man was subsequently asked to take field sobriety tests. He agreed and failed them, according to police. He was placed under arrest. He was said to have admitted to driving under the influence. The man was not of age to purchase alcohol, but allegedly had a false driver's license and used it for that purpose. While he was being booked, law enforcement stated that he tried to discard a baggy that was later found to have cocaine in it. He faces multiple charges for these allegations.

Although the evidence in this case seems hard to dispute, there are numerous ways in which a DUI defense can be lodged in a case similar to this. For example, it is possible that the arrest in a similar situation might not have been done according to protocol. There could have been an issue with the tests. And an accompanying drug possession charge could be called into question. For assistance in combating these kinds of charges, a driver in a similar situation would be well-advised to call an attorney as soon as possible to plan for his defense.
