Motor vehicle deaths up 6%. How does South Carolina stack up?

The number of motor vehicle deaths exceeded 40,000 in 2016, representing the first time the rate has cracked the 40,000 threshold since 2007, according to a release by the National Safety Council (NSC).

The uptick in road deaths is cause of alarm with both governing agencies and the NSC, who note that the monetary damages from auto accidents in 2016 have amounted to over $430 billion dollars, which includes “wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, employer costs, and property damage.”

How does South Carolina stack up against the rest of the U.S.?

According to the report, 1,015 deaths occurred on South Carolina roads during 2016, an increase of 6% from 2015 and 23% from 2014. The national increase was also 6% from 2015 to 2016, however it was only 14% from 2014 to 2016.

South Carolina ranks as the 12th deadliest state, per the official reports. Texas, the deadliest state for road accidents in 2016, suffered 3,751 casualties, a 7% increase from the previous year.

October ranks as the deadliest month in 2016, in which 3,790 deaths occurred.
Similarly, medically consulted motor-vehicle injuries, in which a driver, passenger or pedestrian requires medical attention, were estimated to be at 4.6 million, an increase of 7% from 2015.

What steps does the NSC recommend moving forward?

In order to address the climbing number of fatal accidents on American roads, the NSC is recommending a multi-part initiative, as per Claims Journal

In part, they recommend the following:

  • Installing mandatory interlock devices for even first time DUI offenders
  • Standardized and universal seat belt and motorcycle helmet laws
  • Standardized auto safety technology, such as lane deviation warning systems
  • Initiatives aimed at curbing distracted driving
