Popular St. Ives Apricot Scrub at center of lawsuit

One of the most popular skin care items is the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Thousands of people across the U.S. scrub their faces daily with the product, in a quest for clearer skin free of blemishes and imperfections.

However, two women are now suing Unilever, the maker of the scrub, claiming the product causes skin damage and abrasions, according to Buzzfeed and Top Class Actions.

The two women are claiming that the product contains abrasives like crushed walnut shells, which actually scratch and damage the skin, leading to potential bacterial infections and inflammation.

In particular, the two plaintiffs are alleging that the scratches caused by the walnut shells create a perfect environment for bacteria to ravage and further damage the skin.

While the Apricot Scrub has been popular since the 90s, it has come under consistent criticism lately. Online communities of skin care "addicts" and amateur aestheticians have criticized its abrasiveness, claiming the product does more harm than good.

Dermatologist Approved?

Bottles of the Apricot Scrub claim to be “Dermatologist Tested.” However, the plaintiffs are also challenging that claim in court, saying that the product is not actually recommended by dermatologists or other skin care experts.

For their part, Unilever informed Buzzed that, while they don’t comment on pending litigation, they are “proud to be America’s top facial scrub brand and stand by our dermatologist tested formula”

Elsewhere, dermatologists are cautioning consumers to research their skincare purchases, and to find products that work for their particular skin type, whether in conjunction with dermatologists or after thorough research.
