Goal Of Zero Traffic Deaths In 30 Years, Says U.S. Gov't

The Obama administration has set a goal of reducing traffic deaths and injuries to zero within the next 30 years, according to an article by ABC News.

According to Transportation Department officials, they are laying out a plan to begin reducing fatal accidents by implementing various safety measures. In particular, the department will focus on promoting seat belt use, installing rumble strips on roads and highways, and curbing drunk and/or distracted driving.

The timing of the proposition coincides with major changes in our automotive industry. In particular, companies such as Google and Uber are testing and implementing even more autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles. In their statement, the Transportation Department made it clear that the projected increased use of self-driving cars will make the goal of zero deaths easier to reach. Human error, which is the reported cause of 94 percent of accidents, can be curbed or completely eliminated by autonomous vehicles, according to the department.

The plan was put in place due to an increase of 7.2 percent in road deaths last year, prompting the administration to create new goals and possible solutions. However, according to preliminary data, there is yet another increase of road deaths within the first six months of 2016, according to estimates by the National Safety Council.

Until the full incorporation of autonomous vehicles, however, drivers should remember that they still have a responsibility to drive safely and avoid potential distractions while on the road, including cell phone usage, which has become a major issue for those seeking to curb road accidents.
