First Phones, Now Samsung Facing Exploding Washing Machines

On the heels of facing severe media and legal scrutiny for the recall of its smart phone, the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung is now facing allegations that its washing machines are exploding in people's homes, according to an article by the Washington Post

The article mentions three plaintiffs, women from Texas, Indiana and Georgia, who contend that their washing machines exploded mid cycle.

What Is Causing These Explosions?

According to the Post, these explosions don't occur as a result of chemical reactions within lithium ion batteries, as with the Galaxy Note 7. Rather, the washing machines vibrate violently under heavy loads, causing the tub to become unfastened, resulting in a centrifugal explosion, as alleged by the suit.

While the lawsuit alleges that there are 11 Samsung models that are potentially dangerous, the exact models have not yet been revealed. Nevertheless, the plaintiffs are seeking immediate action from the multinational corporation, including an immediate release of a safety warning.

For its part, Samsung has yet to comment on the pending lawsuit. They did, however, release a statement, advising owners of their top-loading washing machines to use gentler cycles such as the "delicates cycle," in order to prevent any potential mishaps. According to Samsung and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), no incidents have been reported by users who use those cycles.

Samsung also called the incidents "rare" and stressed that users have completed "hundreds of millions of loads without incident since 2011," according to their official statement.

In a recent statement, Samsung and CPSC also said they are working on a "remedy."
